The directorial debut of Scott Caan, DALLAS 362 is a coming-of-age story set in the backwoods of Texas. Rusty (Shaun Hatosy) and his pal Dallas (Caan) are aimless troublemakers, spending their time either getting drunk and fighting in bars, or sobering up in the local police station's holding cell. Rusty's mother Mary (Kelly Lynch) constantly bails them out of prison, but tires of her son's reckless behavior, asking her boyfriend (and therapist) Bob (Jeff Goldblum) to speak with him. As Bob and Rusty strike up a friendship, Rusty is increasingly torn between the possibility of turning his life around and his loyalty to Dallas, who appears rapidly on the course to a life of crime. DALLAS 362 is an acclaimed independent drama that examines the difficulty in choosing between self-interest and the obligation to others. [More]

While Dallas 362 ultimately lacks the heft to make it anything more than an actors' showcase and Hollywood calling card, it does reveal a nascent talent for Caan.

Caan's directorial debut is eager to please, with flashy montage sequences, lots of colourful character bits ... black humour and a punk/blues score from the likes of Soledad Brothers and White Stripes.

Dallas 362 is basically a road movie that doesn't really go anywhere.

Mr. Caan's debut film is not quite a whole thing, but it offers up enough promising fragments to make his sophomore effort worth watching for.

Caan shows with his rough-and-tumble character dramedy precisely why actors like to work for actors.

[Goldblum's] wildly improbable character is all too typical of the contrived plotting and reductive psychology that propel the script to its inevitable conclusion.

Dallas 362 is generally a mature piece of work, with dialogue that crackles and snaps, and an unexpectedly strong emotional pull.

The film’s opening and closing credit sequences, with their wonderfully constructed preamble and epilogue, show Caan’s filmmaking at its best and most fully articulated. We look forward to hearing more from him.

Scott Caan has been an enjoyable presence in movies, but his confident eye behind the camera and on the page is even more noteworthy. Dallas 362 is as assured a debut as I’ve seen on the film festival circuit this year.
