The crew in this Danish gangster comedy are well into adulthood and still haven't outgrown the petty crimes they commit with the crew. Fleeing from a crime spree, they see a more legit future in an abandoned building as the old friends decide to renovate and open a restaurant in this hiding place they have stumbled upon. Now, these motley crew, who weren't even skilled in making a living illegally, attempt to turn the lives around while turning the restaurant business upside down. Combining a brutish gangster sensibility with a gentle sense of humor, director Anders Thomas Jensen (screenwriter of MIFUNE) has constructed an unusually sweet comedy about ruffians. [More]

Mostly, it exults in its inspired potential rather than any brilliant results.

Since the ultimate direction of the gangster plot is obvious from the beginning, the filmmaker is counting on the freshness and unpredictability of such moments to keep us engaged -- a gamble that pays off only modestly.

A fun, rich, Danish multi-character study that scores courtesy of its fully-dimensional story, interesting dialogue and vivid characterizations.

A bleak male-bonding comedy that's a queasy blend of brutal humor and escalating sentimentality, it is overlong, heavy-handed, slow and unpersuasive.

The script is full of witty dialogue and simple yet complex situations.

The personality conflicts among the four seem a bit formulaic, as do the flashbacks explaining why each turned to crime, but the narrative is inventive enough to sustain interest.

This impressive debut feature from writer-director Anders Thom as Jensen is decidedly offbeat.
