Sparred by the triumphant onscreen return of a certain Johnny Rico, we turn our DVD-minded focus to a few stars of yesterday popping up in new DVD releases this week: Casper van Dien, Christopher Lambert, and Heather Graham. Also, check out this week's geek-tastic new releases: a Starship Troopers box set, Code Monkeys, and Captain James Tiberius Kirk's restored adventures aboard the Starship Enterprise.

Casper Van Dien is back in Starship Troopers: Marauder

If you know the name Johnny Rico, then you know Casper van Dien. Back in 1997, Van Dien turned in a career-defining performance as the brash "roughneck" recruit Rico in Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers; since that breakout role, he appeared in no less than 28 (mostly made-for-TV or direct-to DVD) films. Unnecessary DVD re-release of the week: Christopher Lambert's Fortress

In the world of home video, it seems everything old can become new again when re-masterings, retrospective commentaries, or new footage come into play. But what if no new changes are made whatsoever? Don't check out Lionsgate's new re-release of Stuart Gordon's Fortress, the horror veteran's schlocky-but-entertaining sci-fi flick from 1993 starring direct-to-video king Christopher Lambert. In it, Lambert stars as an Army officer imprisoned when he and his wife decide to conceive more than the allotted one child per couple; highlights include what happens when unruly prisoners get "intestined." But anyone looking for further insights from Gordon or even Lambert will be duly disappointed; the new release, out this week, is merely a repackaged version of Artisan's 2001 release. As for Lambert, he's since returned to his bread-and-butter -- direct-to-video and foreign language films - though we are excited at the thought of him resurrecting Lord Rayden for a 2010 Mortal Kombat sequel.

The Where-Has-Heather-Graham-Gone Update of the Week

Speaking of celebrities who've fallen off the face of Planet Hollywood, this week we stumble across Heather Graham. Once an in-demand Hollywood Roller Girl, Graham has taken to appearing in tiny indie and DVD flicks in the past few years: a travel writer in the romantic-comedy Cake; a hot lesbian in the romantic comedy Gray Matters; a hot lesbian in the dark drama Broken. (Anyone see a trend here?) This week Graham's back with another quirky indie: Miss Conception, the comic tale of one woman's quest to conceive a child at any costs before her "baby making days" are over.

Hey Jen does that second season of Star Trek come on Blu-Ray? Other then that not much else here interest me. I guess I will rent Smart People next month. It seens like August is a slow month of good dvds, I cant wait til next month for Iron Man, Speed Racer, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

I'm pretty sure it's just available as a standard DVD release. Even without Blu-ray, I'd love to have it just to watch it...also, I agree about this week being rather slow, Starship Troopers and Code Monkeys aside.

d3mn, i was actually looking forward to renting Rogue. i'll wait till the tmeter goes down though, i'm done watching stuff critics say are "good". they have zero taste. TDK not included...

urgh, Nim's Island. poor gerard butler. follows up the great 300 with a kiddy chic flick and the Saw: Romance chic flick with scary Hillary Swank.

ROGUE was surprisingly excellent! Better than i thought it would be, and the croc looked real! Unlike the Hulk, which was made around the same time, with bigger budget. WTF?

Starship troopers 3 eh? What a sinful waste! First was excellent! 2 was embarrassingly awful and 3 looks better than 2.

Could have been a great franchise, up there with Aliens, Terminator etc..
Instead, it goes the path of the Dusk till Dawn sequels.

Golly! And I thought hollywood was in it for the money.
Must be some kind of tax break thing?

since there's not much going this week DVD-wsise, i'm gonna toss out a random recommendation, mainly for those with Netflix because I dunno about video store coverage on this one:

Aaron Russo's "America: Freedom to Fascism"

It discusses the fact that their is no actual law requiring Americans to pay a federal income tax. in fact, it's wholly unconstitutional.

All of our federal tax money just goes to the national debt which is handled by the Federal Reserve. However, the Federal Reserve is a privately-owned bank with no actual "federal" standing, as far being a government agency.

Basically, our hard-earned money goes to a group of anonymous bankers who have been licensed to print American currency without the requirement of a gold standard to back it.

In watching the film, we realize the greater repercussions of our dependence on this system, including the current sad state of affairs in our country, and what's in store for the years to come. I don't know about you, but this really aggravated me.

EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD SEE THIS FILM, so give it a whirl.
