Disney Sequel Party Coming in 2011?
Franchisepalooza!
It was once one of the most sequel-averse studios in Hollywood, but in recent decades, Disney has warmed up to the concept of the film franchise -- and if the latest rumors are on target, Mickey and the gang are about to heave a stack of sequels our way.
According to an Ain't It Cool News scooper calling himself Wall*E-Wonka, Disney's warming up several plates of leftovers. Aside from a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean and third National Treasure -- both of which have been recently discussed -- the latest rumors have Cars 2 and a Tron sequel (in 3-D!) reaching theaters in 2011.
Slashfilm's Peter Sciretta has published a report on the AICN rumors, offering a helpful breakdown of what's already been rumored/reported about each of the purported sequels; the spectrum runs from "probably gonna happen" (Pirates 4, Treasure 3) to "maybe" (Tron 3-D) to "huh?" (Cars 2). Personally, we decided never to put anything sequel-related past Disney after Bambi II, but head on over to both of the reports and decide for yourselves.

on Mar 03 2008 05:36 AM "Tron" is easily one of the most underrated films from Disney's studio...I'm so excited to hear that it might finally find its audience. Might I suggest Zack Snyder ("300") as director? Though I'd much rather prefer a 3-D re-release (a la "The Nightmare Before Christmas") of the original than a straight-up sequel/ (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 05:50 AM I'm just hopeful for Wall-E, Toy Story 3 and The Priness and the Frog(which hopefully will reboot the 2D animated movies). Cars 2? Not so much. Tron 2?? Bleh. As for Pirates 4 and NT 3, I doubt P4 will happen. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 06:29 AM It's not like Disney doesn't release tons of sequels already. I liked all of the Pirates movies, but I'm a little worn out on them now. Maybe by 2011 I'll be ready for another. I love the original Tron and would love another, IF they can somehow capture the original feel of the first movie. Doing it in 3-D does nothing for me. I don't see the need for or wouldn't want any of the other sequels. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 07:30 AM Where's Tim Burton's Alice remake? That better be here by 2011 at the latest. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 07:55 AM Tron 2 could be good. as long as it dont look like lawnmower-man. MICKEY MOUSE I would like to see brought up to date, maybe cgi? Anyone remember the game, Castle of illusion? That could be a great new Mickey adventure. Weird how Mickey Mouse is Disneys symbol, yet he has faded into nowhere over the years. Bring him back i say!!! P4,... Meh! if they do it, they should have a simpler story with less love story, less chat and more adventure. P3 kinda sucked because it just extended what we saw in P2, but 3 didnt add any new cool stuff. it just recycled 2, in 1 we had skeletons, in 2 we had a kraken AND davy jones, in 3 we had... davy jones again and some salt. on Mar 03 2008 08:07 AM if anything mickey mouse related then a Kingdom Hearts movie pls. cars 2? nah, not really intrested. Pirates: pls not maybe in 20 years, but then johnny will be like so not cool anymore. Tron: oh pls not, neither a remake, nor a sequel. and really 3d wont do anything. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 08:25 AM The original Tron was great, and I won't bash a sequel unless we hear they are really messing it up. As for the others, well I could handle Pirates without Orlando. National Treasures 1 was entertaining, the 2nd was not, but it made alot of money, so I understand. Cars was average at best, why bother with a sequel. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 08:28 AM In reply to this comment (#1614300) Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDER LAND is coming out in 2010. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 08:30 AM In reply to this comment (#1614300) I would see the TRON sequel which would probably be fun in 3D, I would see PIRATES 4 I still think the sequels were fun- but not great like the first one. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 10:04 AM The /film article says he's surprised about Cars since it wasn't that huge at the box office. That's true, but the toys and other merchandise reportedly sold well over a billion dollars worth. It's my least favorite Pixar film, and was on their lower side for BO, but they're making a sequel just to sell toys and DVDs. And I definitely won't bother to see it. Really a shame for Pixar fans, it will be a waste of their once-yearly release slot. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 10:12 AM I want to see a tron sequel but I can't help but wonder if It hasn't already been done. The original tron was a video game programmers trip into his own game. The graphics of the game are state of the art FOR THAT TIME. But to do a movie on this issue now, with video games looking like damn near movies and with sometimes bigger budgets wouldn't this just end up like a movie version of the show Re-Boot? There is no more black space in games anymore, there are life like backgrounds. The enemy AI isn't just stupid routines (on good games) its smart and adaptive. ***Yes I know that in the show ReBoot the computer is fighting against the user but as far as the "being in a game experiance" it would pretty much be the same except with updated graphics. I still want to see what they come up with though. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 10:30 AM Why do a Tron sequel when no-one saw the original? (I liked it too, but come on, how many 'normal' people saw it?) Just re-make it. The alternative is to open with Lost-style exposition catchup material. That will go over wonderfully. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 11:26 AM The only Pixar movies that should get sequels are Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles. NOT Cars haha (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 11:33 AM Cars really was terrible. I'll go so far as to call it the worst CG movie I've ever seen (keeping in mind that I haven't seen Barnyard or Surf's Up or Ice Age 2 - although I HAVE seen Chicken Little). But, minderbender's right about the merchandising. My baby nephew adores his Lightning McQueen toys, and wall stickers, and blankets, and dishes, and footie pajamas, and.... (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 11:36 AM In reply to this comment (#1614623) The computer graphics as seen by Flynn, Tron, Ram, and all them while in the digital realm doesn't have to be that different. Remember that Flynn interfaces the world through text based command-line interfaces when he's accessing the world controlled by Master Control (while he's hacking anyways). What we see when they enter the digital world is just some visual representation of what's happening. It's a very fake, mystical view of a digital world of programs interacting with each other (unlike the Matrix which is a virtual reality). It doesn't have to be full CGI glory, best graphics that can be made for movies and video games, or realistic looking. If a box wireframe works to represents something, maybe that's all you see. With the original being such a success and enjoyed by its fans, I'd prefer to keep the 'old graphics' feel with being maybe a little spruced up here and there. The more digital/alien the environment is, the cooler it would be. I agree that making a new Tron movie with new state-of-the-art reality-looking CGI would end up not being spectacular as it would seem too much like modern movies. Just don't bother if that's what they're planning. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 12:22 PM Disney will squeeze every last nickel out of any franchise if they can do it. There really doesn't need to be a "Cars" sequel, but it sure will help promote the new Cars ride at the California Adventure. I'm sure that's how they look at it. And "Tron"?? Does anyone under 30 even know about "Tron". I know of it, but I could care less about it. I can't imagine who the target audience is for that nonsense. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 12:23 PM Quite frankly, Disney could get away with putting out bucketloads more of Pirate films if they made them as a series of disconnected adventures a la James Bond and Indiana Jones. Doing "Pirates" as a trilogy didn't make much sense to me anyway. And who really cares about Will and (the chick)? Just make it The Adventures of Jack Sparrow. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 12:58 PM In reply to this comment (#1614698) Your right, they could still do it with the wire frame look and it be interesting, but then it would kinda feel like a period piece. Almost like doing a film in black in white in today's day and age of High Definition color and brilliance. But that could still be great if done right. And yeah the matrix was what I'd like to call the future of gaming with everything being so close to reality that the mind could forget whats real and whats fake, Tron is pretty much the past of gaming. But the games of today are steadily getting closer to VR. (I mean good VR not that ***** they had in the 90's) I hope they can find a happy medium that accurately represents what it might be like if tonight you got sucked in to Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion or Metal Gear IV or something. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2008 01:04 PM In reply to this comment (#1614698) But on a funny note, It would not be good to see a movie based on text commands. That would be like watching someone get stuck in a MS Outlook program. Or stuck in the old DOS!....Que up horror music... (Reply to this) |

on Mar 03 2008 02:09 PM Since were talking Cars 2 which is in affiliation with Pixar and would be an absolute waste of time. Monsters Inc 2 anybody? This movie has sequel written all over it by the way it ended and its been 7 years. Also a sequel that should have been made two years ago, The Incredibles 2. This movie ended with a mole man coming out of the ground and the whole family ready to fight. Duh! Instant hit and its been 4 years. What the hell are the studios wasting time with pointless movies when in my opinion these two are could possibly be very anticipated. Cars 2 (no thanks) Treasure 2 (yes, but much later with a good concept and better director) Pirates 4 (more Sparrow please but not soon). (Reply to this) |
