Carrell's Smart Gets Some Direction
by Scott Weinberg | December 05, 2005
Blog Article | Discuss Article
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the big-screen adaptation of "Get Smart," which stars Steve Carrell as a hapless secret agent, will be directed by Peter Segal, the guy who brought you "The Longest Yard," "50 First Dates," "Anger Management," "Nutty Professor 2," and "Tommy Boy."

"Peter Segal has signed on to direct "Get Smart," the big-screen adaptation of the classic TV series for Warner Bros. Pictures. Steve Carell is attached to star as hapless secret agent Maxwell Smart, who was played by the late Don Adams on the small screen. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the series saw Adams act as Agent 86, a spy for CONTROL, fighting the evil forces of KAOS. The big-screen version, which has just undergone a rewrite by Tom Astle and Matt Ember, will contemporize the setting, with CONTROL falling on hard times and not getting the big government funding other spy agencies, like the CIA, do."

Oh, already you're predicting the worst. It's Steve Carrell, and Peter Segal's movies made $100 million plus in the b.o. It's a no-brainer, win-win situation. Just wait until the damn movie comes out!

Here we go...I'm afraid we might have an oversaturation of steve carrell at the multiplex. Just like Will Ferrell, the studios go with someone they feel is hot. I loved steve carrell in 40 year old virgin, but I'm scared that I might get tired of seeing him onscreen. Jim Carrey is perfect with his movies. He keeps us waiting just long enough for another comedy that we rush to the movies when he does. I love Ferrell, but have we not seen a diminished desire to see him at the movies. Bewitched was crap, Kicking and Screaming was crap, Melinda and Melinda, while a good concept for a movie, was forcing Ferrell on the screen. I'm curious to see what develops.

Speaking of Will Ferrell, here's hoping "The Producers Musical" does good. Some of the actor's scenes are really funny, and there's Oscar buzz surrounding it... according to EW. But you didn't hear that from me.
