Online Film Critics Name Their Year-End Favorites
by Scott Weinberg | January 09, 2007
Discuss Article | Blog Article | Email To A Friend
Hosted right here at the illustrious Rotten Tomatoes is the official website of the Online Film Critics Society, an international group of flick analyzers who put their heads together every December to come up with their favorite films, performances and components of the year. And as a proud member of the OFCS, I'm pretty happy with our picks this year ... even if (almost) none of my choices happened to win.

BEST PICTURE: "United 93"

BEST DIRECTOR: Martin Scorsese - "The Departed"

BEST ACTOR: Forest Whitaker - "The Last King of Scotland"

BEST ACTRESS: Helen Mirren - "The Queen"

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Jackie Earle Haley - "Little Children"

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Abigail Breslin - "Little Miss Sunshine"

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Guillermo del Toro - "Pan’s Labyrinth"

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Alfonso Cuaron, Timothy J. Sexton, David Arata, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby - "Children of Men"

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Emmanuel Lubeski - "Children of Men"

BEST EDITING: Clare Douglas, Richard Pearson and Christopher Rouse - "United 93"

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Clint Mansell - "The Fountain"

BEST DOCUMENTARY: "An Inconvenient Truth"

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: "Pan's Labyrinth" (Mexico)

BEST ANIMATED FILM: "A Scanner Darkly"

BREAKTHROUGH FILMMAKER: Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris - "Little Miss Sunshine"

BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMER: Sacha Baron Cohen - "Borat"

(So what do you guys think? Good picks or lame?)

Glad to see some credit given to Pan's Labyrinth, movie was pretty fantastic.

Pretty good, I loved Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed so it's good to see them on here. The only one I really dislike is Borat. I planed on seeing Children of Men this last weekend but screwed myself over, so I'm going to see it this weekend so hopefully I like it.

yep that's probably pretty close to the list I would make. although I haven't seen The Last King of Scotland. United 93, Pan's and Children of Men are all fantastic and little miss sunshine blew me away.

Bad year
No disrespect to United 93, but I think voting that the best movie of the year was a flick about 9/11 kind of indicates that this year was a bad year for movies in terms of creativity. There was a previous article that talked about '06 taking more money at the box office than the year before. I'm surprised no one pointed out it now costs $10 at some places to watch movies! When I visited my family for the holidays, I couldn't find one movie that we could all go see and enjoy (Pursuit of Happyness would probably have been the only one). Little Miss Sunshine and Borat were probably the best movies I saw all year, although I haven't seen the Departed.

I loved United 93, but I don't know if it was the year's best movie. I'm most happy with the wins for Scorsese, Pan's Labyrinth and A Scanner Darkly. overall, a pretty good list.

every choice was solid and correct, except for United 93 as best picture. it was a stunner but not movie of the year. that honor should hands down go to The Departed. that was the absoulte (sic) best movie of 2006, and the best gangster theamed (sic) movie since goodfellas.

United 93 was dull. I've only seen a few of the other movies, but they were pretty good.

United 93 is an overrated, borefest, the only part that was good was the last 10 minutes. Otherwise im gald to see that they gave a nod to A Scanner Darkly.

well i disagree with all of you. no movie, regardless of style or genre, moved me more than United 93. nothing. the Departed and Children of Men are right behind it (as well as Science of Sleep), but nothing had me completely disarmed like United 93. and that's what most movies should do: push your emotions to the limit. Great choices, though I've yet to see Pan's Labyrinth, which I cannot wait for, as well as the Last King of Scotland and the Queen.

Glad to see Pan's Labyrinth getting some recognition. Children of Men is also gerat. Again, not sure if United 93 deserves a best picture award, but it's still up there. Well done!

So they picked a fantasy film for best picture. Hmmm... must have been a slow year.
