Joel Schumacher Wants to Direct Neil Gaiman's "Sandman"???
by Scott Weinberg | February 07, 2007

At last year's Comic Con, writer/artist Neil Gaiman said "I'd rather no Sandman movie got made than [to have] a bad Sandman movie." And now comes word that director Joel Schumacher might want to tackle this project.

The quote and the info comes from IESB.net, but aside from "Joel Schumacher expressed some interest in Gaiman's Sandman while being interviewed at a recent press junket," that's pretty much all we got. Frankly I think Joel Schumacher and Neil Gaiman would go together like gravel and peanut butter, but that's just me.

Claire Danes in Gaiman's next adapted work, this summer's "Stardust"

Not that I'm a blind hater where Schumacher's concerned. True that his bad flicks outnumber his good ones, but he's made a handful of solid titles ("Phone Booth," "Falling Down," "The Lost Boys"). I just don't see the director of "Batman & Robin" as the right guy to adapt a Neil Gaiman book -- especially one like "Sandman."

I'm dying to see a Sandman movie one day. The original sceenplay that was written for it was actually pretty good too but the studios turned it down. But if it means putting that guy as a director I'd rather see no movie than watch the Sandman with ribber nipples.

I'd rather see American Gods on film. Or Good Omens. I think Sandman won't translate well on film.

We need a Lobo movie already, and to let Tarantino or Rodriguez run with it...

Lobo is a great idea but the humor would have to be done just right. "Bite Me Fanboy"

Speaking of the Sandman lore, whatever became of the Death: The High Cost of Living movie?

For the love of Morpheus!!! Dont make a Sandman movie Neil!!! Sandman is my favorite comic book series and I dont want to see this made into a film because any way you do it, it wont work, sandman is to episodical to become a film. I'm scared shitless this is going to turn into another Constantine....Plus, this would need to be a special effects orgy to come close to Sandmans look.....and special effect orgies are teh suck!

Edit: Plus Shumacher is so bad!!!! If you absolutely have to do it get Christopher Nolan

Bring on Lucifer Morningstar movies, thats what I say. Those stories are so interesting, have the guy who plays Green Arrow on Smallville play Lucifer. Now that would be sweet you guys I am totally seriously right now.

The Sandman movie should be reserved for the likes of Tim Burton, I feel he would have the right visuals for it. Personally I thought he shouldve done Neverwhere. Or maybe the Wachowski bros. but I heard theyre doing Speed Racer.

Kudos to whoever said "American Gods" or "Good Omens" (although wasn't Terry Gilliam supposed to be doing that movie?)before "Sandman"....or what about "Anansi boys"? Just please don't let Schumacher anywhere NEAR any of them.

If Sandaman does get made into a feature, how about animating it a la "Waking Life" or that other one whose name escapes me right now.....

I feel sick about this...
There are very few directors, I feel, who have what it takes to translate the Sandman material. Considering the look and feel of Pan's Labyrinth I would say Guillermo Del Toro is our man! Maybe Jean-Pierre Jeunet, or hell, even David Lynch. But for christs sake, If Schumacher gets to direct this thing then I am going burn hollywood to the ground.

Its bad enough the Silver Surfer is included in the sequel to Fantastic Four. Why do I live in a world where a movie that sucks that bad gets a sequel which will subsequently weaken the legacy of a hero that deserves his own damned movie!

If there's one comic that doesn't need the big-screen treatment, it's this one. Just don't do it. The story is far too big for just a movie or even a trilogy.

Thank god it's just not me that shivers at the thought of this. Sandman is too big and episodical and everything in it is tied to everything else, so in order to make a movie of it you would need to change the story so much.

I also agree about the Lucifer Morningstar movie thing...but can you imagine the controversy and all the christian group protests there would be if this was announced?
