Cuaron, del Toro, and Inarritu Form Production Company

Universal Pictures has announced a five pic financing deal worth $100 million with a new production company formed by top Mexican directors Alfonso Cuaron ("Children of Men"), Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth"), and Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu ("Babel") called cha cha cha, according to a report in Saturday's Variety.

Of the five movies, some will be in Spanish and others will be in English. As part of this deal, Universal will co-own the movies and sell them as well; its indie arm Focus Features will handle international sales, with domestic rights to be sold separately.

''Rudo y Cursi,'' the company's first film directed by Carlos Cuaron and starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, is currently in pre-production. Focus is pre-selling the film at Cannes.

"We are proud to be not only part of the world cinema community, but also students of it. Universal and Focus are affording us a safe haven to keep doing the work we love as well as nurture other filmmakers," the three filmmakers said in a joint statement.

I have a lot of repect for these filmmakers. Inarrtu is probably my least favorite of the three with Del Toro being second and Cuaron being first but I have to admit I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.

Cuaron made CHILDREN OF MEN, which was my favourite film of last year! Hopefully he will make a trilogy out of it like it deserves. Totally left me wanting more.

Can we let the trilogy thing die please. It'd be great if Children of Men didn't get a sequel and let it stand on its own as a great achievment in filmmaking.

We don't need a Pirates or Matrix in our hands.

this is quite possibly THE BEST film related news in a very, very, very long time!!! Children of Men, Babel, Pan's Labyrinth, 21 Grams and Y Tu Mama Tambien are some of the best films of the last couple decades. I hope they continue that record.

Not surprising that these 3 got together -- they definitely make good movies, but other than Pan's Lab and COM, most of them have been over-hyped and overrated (particularly Babel) -- on the other hand, COM was better than the source material (quite a bit) and that's always a laudable achievement.

I admire Babel a great deal as it is so vastly different from other well known films. Along with 21 Grams, Babel is life on film. Carries a tremendous theme, with superb acting and gutsy, intelligent direction. Inarritu is probably one of the most influential filmmakers on me at the moment, especially for his cinematography, editing style and writing.

The three of them are all tremendously talented in their own chosen styles, and I would have to see another picture from each of the them before deciding who is the "best".

This is definitely the best movie news out in a long while! These three directors have made some of the best movies of our time! I don't know if anyone else caught it but Focus Features will be carrying the series. Which is even better news because I always look forward to all the Focus films every year! Great news.... can't wait!!!!!!

I love Cuaron and del Toro, but I'm mixed on Inarritu. 21 Grams was pretty good, but Babel was very dissapointing. Also, he's supposedly a complete jackass.

But this is great news...hopefully it will set a precedent.

These are three very gifted filmmakers. Children of Men was certainly one of the very best films of last year and Pan's Labyrinth was amazing as well but Babel was definetly overrated but I love Inarritu's other work, especially Amores Perros.
